History Textbooks

PreK through 6th:

One of my favorite history resources to use with PreK-2nd graders is History For Little Pilgrims by Christian Liberty Press. This reader covers world and American history from Creation through 20th century. It is illustrated with adorable cartoons and beautiful photographs. Simple projects and a unit review are included in each chapter. ISBN 1930092849.

For teaching multiple children in K to 5th or 6th grade (up to 8th grade depending on the student), I recommend using multi-level units instead of textbooks. (See Multi-level Teaching and Sample Curriculum Plan for more information.)The Story of the World series (along with the workbooks that go with it) by Susan Bauer combined with Diana Waring tapes will give you everything you need to teach a hands-on, multi-level history that will appeal to all learners including your Kinesthetic and Auditory learners. Here are some sample titles:

If you would like to do multi-level teaching using a textbook, use the same textbook for all your children. I recommend that you go through Exploring World History and Exploring American History by Ray Notgrass or the Bob Jones series (listed below) using your oldest child's grade level. Read the textbook orally to your children, have them orally answer questions, assign grade-level, personal reading using library books related to the topic, and assign writing projects according to ability.

For your Visual Learner, try History Scribe.

For your Kinesthetic learner, I recommend that you also incorporate hands-on activities using activity books listed in History Curriculum Recommendations. (NOTE: If you use this plan, you will only need to purchase the teacher's edition of the textbook, not the whole set. You can select that choice from the links below.)

Lifepac Government & Economics, Grade 12, Complete Set . For a cheaper version of Government and Economics, Lifepacs is the way to go. However, this is best for the Read/Write learner. Very few illustrations. Fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice curriculum.
